I loved the first book in this series, I loved seeing all the different versions of Katherine and Matthew throughout history and watching them fall in love over and over again. It was magical. It's sequel, although I enjoyed it, has me a little bit conflicted mostly due it it's main character Clove.I don't know what it was about Clove, but I just didn't connect with her. Firstly, she just kept making such stupid decisions. Time Travel 101, you don't tell people that you are from a different time and you don't tell them about their future. Everyone knows that! Instead Clove breaks the rule, tells people information they should not be knowing and then acts really surprised when things go wrong. Like "I told him that the love of his life was going to die and he had to let her. I don't understand why he saved her?" Cut to me face palming and yelling at my book! So yeah, I didn't like Clove, but the rest of the book, well that was AMAZING!
One thing this book was great at explaining all the mysterious parts of The Next Together. We re-visit parts of the first book but with Clove thrown into the mix and it was just so cleverly written by James. Seriously, she must have had one hell of a timeline plan in order to keep up with all the different times and versions of characters etc. If you are not a fan of time travel and the thought of alternative timelines makes you mind turn to mush then maybe this isn't a book for you!
I really liked the futuristic world that James created for Clove and the new generation of characters and there were definitely some gadgets in there that I hope will be invented one day. Printing your own clothes rather than having to go out and buy them? Yes please! I can't imagine the amount of time that must have gone into the research and imagining of all of the times this book features and again I can't praise James enough for this.
Finally, one thing I did like about Clove was that James decided to make her gay. There are so many female heroines in YA at the moment who are typical "I think I'm plain but actually I'm really beautiful and I end up with the boy in the end" but Clove is nothing like that and I love that James decided to add this new dynamic to both Clove and the story by making her an LGBT character.

The Last Beginning The Next Together Lauren James 9781406358063 Books Reviews
The book is amazing I fell in love with clove from page one her adventure to the past was heartwarming
What an amazing book this was to complement the first book The Next Together. I really loved the whole storyline and I love Lauren James’ writing, very realistic and full of action, suspense, charm and wit. Clove is a great character, easy to warm to, and I enjoyed the scenes when she finds her parents again and again. I also liked Jen and Tom, and Ella is a lovable, funny girl, fitting perfectly with Clove. Once again, I liked the inclusions in the book of the use of timelines, internet pages, notes written by the characters, different type fonts, etc. They not only add depth to the story but break up the text and make the chapters shorter so I breezed through this book very quickly. If you have read the first book The Next Together and felt a little bewildered by it all and have some unanswered questions, never fear, everything is properly explained in The Last Beginning, so do not hesitate to continue on with the series, especially as this book ends the duology and ties up all the loose ends. Overall, this is a really enjoyable book with a unique time travelling concept. I highly recommend both The Next Together and The Last Beginning.
The Last Beginning starts sixteen years after The Next Together when Katherine left her newborn baby girl in the care of their family to break Matthew out of prison for a false crime set to cover up the government’s foul plans. This novel begins with sixteen-year-old Clove and her woeful teenager struggles of being in love with her female best friend and impatiently wanting to work on big projects like her parents do. Her parents, Tom and Jen, work at the familiar University of St Andrews where they’ve been developing a real life time travel machine! Lucky for Clove, she’s there to witness the first public demonstration of that machine when she was just eleven years old. From then on she was dying to get in on the action, step into that machine and come out somewhere else.
I finished the second book in this duology a week ago and, in my opinion, it was much better than the first. That’s a bit of an odd statement because I rated the first book pretty highly as well but this book is a total, concrete five stars. I’m not sure if I mentioned it in the review of the first book but I found Katherine to be very annoying in a few select times, mostly in the time period of 2019. I think what mostly annoyed me was that she seemed to be too controlling over the situation. I’m not sure if Matthew felt that way, maybe he enjoyed her leading them. Still, it put a slight drop onto the rating because I couldn’t love her completely as a character while I was reading it. Thankfully, in this book, I fell in love with Clove almost instantly and that love didn’t waver throughout it.
Thankfully, in this book, I fell in love with Clove almost instantly and that love didn’t waver throughout it. Even at sixteen, she seems like such an amazing person. She’s emotional and outrageous at times just like her mother but she’s also very mature for her age and such a genius. Clove had to make some courageous decisions throughout this book and she went to hell and back when she accidentally ruined the world because of her decisions in the past but hey, she fixed it all pretty quickly! Clove also had the help of the most badass robotic AI sidekick, SPART. He was so sassy for most of his lines but you could tell he had some emotions there in his hardwiring. Ella was also an important character to Clove considering she tells her she’s the love of her life when she introduces herself!
It’s not hard to guess that Clove is the daughter of Matthew and Katherine because of her age and the simple fact that she’s the main character in the book after those events but it’s all a big mystery as to where her parents are now after Katherine left. I feel sorry for them for missing out on raising her but Tom and Jen were awesome adoptive parents to Clove. They raised her so well and as a huge bonus, they made that time machine! The events of this book were pretty exciting because it was like going back to the first book and dropping Clove into the mix. I want to live in this book and this world where time travel is an actual possibility in only forty more years! Clearly, you’ll have to read it yourself to see where that machine takes them but I’m honestly so jealous of the future they build because of that machine.
The events of this book were pretty exciting because it was like going back to the first book and dropping Clove into the mix. I love that she sees events and issues that Katherine and Matthew didn’t in their many timelines and that she finds a way to make her mark in each one. I’m really so very impressed with how this one wasn’t so much of a new addition to a story but more like a missing puzzle piece to the first book. Seriously, I want to live in this book and this world where time travel is an actual possibility in only forty more years!
