I happen to like Toni Leland but now I love her! LOL. In this great book, she unites several passions of my own. A couple are big problems in our good country and a couple of things that I am very familiar with.
Two of the problems she addresses are the huge amount of family "battering", either be it, woman, child, or male. The other is what DO you do with a horse you can't get rid of?
Our heroine Julia is married to a very wealthy man who considers her his "property". He is brutal often and she never knows exactly when he might beat the tar out of her. She has lived this way for several years and has been thinking deeply about getting out. It is a hugely fearful thought. Stephan has given her "things" but not love and she is desperate to leave him but knowing the depth of his possessiveness, she continues to stay, until one day..... where in begins our story.
Eventually she finds herself helping at a horse rescue a couple of thousand miles from her home in Washington state. As she had a lovely barn and many wonderful horses while living with Stephan and her beloved Coquette , a show quality Morgan mare, she knows horses but is cautious in allowing that knowledge to show through because she is aware that Stephan is hunting her and any indiscretion might alert whomever is looking for her. Here she learns of the huge problem of excess horses in the U.SA. where they are often sent to the sales and then bought by the "killers" who then send them to slaughter. It is a nasty, nasty business and she worries that some of her horses might end up in the wrong hands as Stephan would do anything he could to hurt her. (First of my passions) She also meets someone who is really lovely, but is very leary of telling him any truths for fear of discovery, but Hector Dillon has his own share of secrets that he is not sharing with her either! He is part of my second passion, he is a long haul truck driver which I did a bit of and its fun to revisit that. The thing is, this long haul driving allows him to look into a friends death too. Between the two of them, that is quite a barrier to deal with but needless to say they manage. Another fun thing for me was that Dillon's home before his life got messed up was in a little tiny town in MD by the name of Olney and its a place I know well having grown up in Sandy Spring MD. which is just down the road from Olney.
The story is well written and fast paced. I really like that her characters have depth to them. No, its not Shakespeare but I for one found it a super read and had trouble putting it down. For me, this is her best yet. Will get to all the others soon! I an tell ya.

It doesn't get much better! Loved this book. Well written, entertaining with lots of plot twists. And horses, of course.
The cover caught my attention. I downloaded the sample and was taken in...I downloaded the book and it was a very long, detailed book. Julia leaves her husband and the adventure begins.....I couldn't give four stars but closer to 3 1/2....
a good read but a bit "light" in some places
This book was absolutely fantastic - it keeps you on the edge of your seat and is very hear warming and realistic. I was not a big fan of "Hearts Over Fences" as I thought it was cheesy. This book was anything but cheesy.

I highly recommend this book - you won't be able to put it down!
Really enjoyed this one. This author has me hooked. Very emotive subjects, in both marital and equine abuse. Both subjects were well written about without being horror stories. Overall a great read. If you love a mystery, a bit of romance, and horses this book is for you.
Loved the pace. Had a hard time putting it down. Being a horse lover and owner and living in Edwardsville for most of my life made it even better. I love romance and suspense. What is not to like about this book? The battered women issue coupled with the need for help at equine rescue operations really makes this book relevant for any woman out there. I highly recommend this book.

So there I was, curled up in bed thinking I'd just take a "quick peek" at my newly acquired copy of Rescue Me. Twenty chapters later, it was 130 a.m. and I was still goggle-eyed awake, ghosting alongside Julia as she choreographed her tenuous escape and rebirth.

I love everything about this book - the synergy of the dual spouse abuse/animal abuse themes, the cliff-hang perils of Julia's escape and self-reinvention, the development of the supporting "cast," the flow of dialogue, the balance between action and contemplation, the conflict and character development, and especially the bell of truth rung over some things we might tend to marginalize as "not-our-concerns." Toni obviously applied meticulous research to all aspects of this piece, from the abuse issues right down to the details involved in acquiring false ID. As a result, she has not only gifted us with a gripping tale peopled with appealing characters and critters, but also taught us a lot along the way. Decidedly a two-thumbs-up! And heartfelt thank you!
