Series: Hard Ink #2.5Warning: Depression and Suicidal Thoughts
--One Sentence Summary--
After being rescued from the Church Gang, Sara is weak and recovering and the only person who makes her feel safe is Easy.
--What are the Issues--
After everything that Jenna has been through she's feeling vulnerable but at the same time she also realizes how important it is to live and do what you want because you never know when it can be taken away from you. Easy has secretly been dealing with depression, PTSD, and suicidal thoughts ever since coming back from Afghanistan where he lost his best friend in an ambush. Easy hasn't told anyone what he's been feeling and he's starting to reach his breaking point. Not only that but there's a decade difference in their ages and Easy feels he's not good enough for someone as young and innocent as Jenna.
--What I Liked and Didn't Like--
This novella was a great little emotional read that takes a break from all the action and adventure of the previous two books. It was nice to see everyone take a moment to relax and hold on to those that they love and care for while they laid low from the Church gang.
A Deep Connection Even With Limited Time -- I enjoyed both Jenna and Easy and though they fall in love over a very short amount of time, they spend most of that time with each other in a very close and intimate way. Easy is caring for Jenna while she recovers; she's weak and sick from her epilepsy and having drugs forced on her and she's dealing with fear and anxiety every time she's left alone. Because of this, Easy is always close and he acts as a sounding board for Jenna when she believes she's a burden to her sister and is too upset to talk to her. The things they share and the intimacy of just being around someone, and sleeping next to someone really helped build their relationship.
Easy's Heartbreaking Confession -- I enjoyed getting to learn more about Easy, as he's been a very quiet side character up to this point. This book is also chock full of the feels as Easy starts to confront his depression and realize that he needs help if he wants to beat it and be a better person for himself and for Jenna. When Easy finally reaches out for that help and speaks with Shane and then with everyone else he realizes just how much the others cared for him and that he wasn't as alone in the world as he felt like he was.
Brotherhood -- One of the things that this book emphasized, but has been shown in the previous books as well, is just what it means when you say there's a Brotherhood in the military. It's more than just a word and this book does a great job of showing just how strong and how meaningful that Brotherhood is and how important it can be to those in it. Not only that but I liked that Laura Kaye emphasizes that when you have a team of special forces soldiers who put their lives on the line everyday and have to trust each other explicitly that means that they can't keep secrets and they can't hide weaknesses. This team understand that they have to be completely upfront about all the good, the bad, and the ugly that they're experiencing if they are expected to work together and trust as strongly as they need to in order to survive whatever mission they have going on.
--Final Thoughts--
I would have loved a full length novel for Easy and Jenna mostly because I hate letting go of characters so soon, but ultimately I thought this book was great and it was a wonderful addition to the series.

Hard to Hold on to A Hard Ink Novella Laura Kaye Seraphina Valentine Seraphine Valentine 9781483041582 Books Reviews
Laura Kaye’s HARD TO HOLD ON TO A Hard Ink Novella, the third book in her Hard Ink Series, is not just a passionate love story, but also an intense story of survival. I did not want to put this book down once I started reading it. When I finished the last word, I let out a big sigh, and the only word I could think of that described this book was “intense.” I sat very still and realized that I felt like I had been smacked in the chest/heart and also mentally. Edward Cantrell, i.e., “Easy” and Jenna Dean, were both survivors of abuse. Easy by his tormented mind trying to deal with the death of one of his team and best friend while in Afghanistan, and from his dishonorable discharge from the Green Berets/Army when he and his team were disgraced and disowned by the U.S. government. Jenna had been abused by gangbangers from the actions of her late father, a drug dealer. She also had epilepsy. To “hear” Jenna tell what happened to her and hear Easy finally admit to his Hard Ink family and to Jenna that he had suicidal thoughts, had me teary eyed, with a lump in my throat. Both Easy and Jenna felt alone until they met and immediately bonded, and when the Hard Ink family, Easy’s “chosen family” accepted his problem, this was a turning point for him. Admitting to his family and to Jenna that he was depressed, was what he needed to do to embrace hope for him.
In this story, Laura Kaye handles this real and horrible problem of military and ex-military trying/committing suicide in a way that builds until the reader now realizes that the signs of depression by an ex-military, i.e., Easy, have been in her first three books in very subtle ways. Easy did not suddenly become depressed and announce he was depressed in this third book. If you have read the first two books, HARD AS IT GETS and HARD AS YOU CAN, go back and reread them and focus on Easy. Depression creeps up on individuals and one can see it with the progression of it with Easy. This is a remarkable book, and a difficult but also hopeful and beautiful story. This book is one that will always be in my mind and heart and for that, I thank Laura Kaye.
I also looked up military causes and I will make a donation to one that helps military and ex-military soldiers. After reading HARD TO HOLD ON TO, I simply have to do it.
Hard to Hold On To was a novella within Laura Kaye’s Hard Ink series.
Edward “Easy” Cantrell was part of the former Special Forces team that was investigating the horrendous betrayal that took the lives of six of their team members in an ambush. The suspenseful plot began in book one but has carried over throughout the series. Easy, as with all of the former seals, carried guilt and pain from the incident. He also suffered from depression. Although they just met, Jenna Dean was the only thing that grounded him.
Jenna, Sara’s sister, was rescued from a kidnapping in Hard As You Can, book two. She had epilepsy which made the captivity worse and left her very ill. Afterwards, Easy was the only thing that made her feel safe and protected.
All of the above took place in previous books. In Something To Hold On To, Kaye took us through the connection and recovery as well as continued, but not concluded, the seal investigation. The entire book covered only a few days so it covered the attraction between the two, battling depression and the healing process.
As typical for a novella, it was short and to the point. It was well written and emotional. I liked the premise and the characters but I craved more. Hard To Hold On To read more like a bridge between two books versus a full story. It also ended in a “happy for now” versus a “forever love” so maybe we’ll see more later. In the meantime, Hard To Come By, focusing on fellow Seal Derek DiMarzio, is up next.
